He is actively involved in many international and national committees.

Dr. Grain Philip Adam

Biography

Dr. Grain Philip Adam is a chief planning expert and HVDC technology manager with NEOM Energy and Water Company (ENOWA), in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Dr Adam is a co-lead of the NEOM Grid Design which concluded in early 2023, with a novel, innovative and trendsetting NEOM Grid of the Future; a technical lead for 3000 MW HVDC Interconnector between Yanbu and NEOM Industrial City (NIC) with nominal DC voltage of ±525 kV and 635 km long; and led development of the NEOM Grid Code, which is tailored for world’s first converter dominated grid to be fed from a 100% renewable energy resources.
Previously, Dr. Adam was with Institute of Energy and Environment (IEE) of the Electrical and Electronics Engineering Department, University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, UK, where he has authored/co-authored over 100 technical reports as part of R&D projects with industry (GE, Mitsubishi, Rolls Royce, SSE, Scottish Power, etc.) and European and UK mixed industry-academic research projects (TWENTIES and PROMOTION funded by EU FP7 and H2020, and Converter Theme of the UK Power Electronics Center funded by EPSRC, etc.), and 3 books in power electronics applications in power systems and renewable energy. Dr Adam is known for his sustained contribution of original ideas in fundamental and applications of power electronics in power systems (modelling and control and modulation strategies of voltage and current source converters, novel topologies of modular and hybrid multilevel converters, control and design of HVDC converters, novel control and protection and AC and DC fault-ride-through strategies of multiterminal HVDC systems in applications such as transnational super grids or renewable integration, FACTS devices, etc.), in which he has published over 150 journal and conference articles, of which 20 articles in the top 1% of highly cited publications, i.e., more than 100 citations per publication.
Dr Adam is a senior member of IEEE and member of IEEE Power Electronics Society and member of Power and Energy Society (PES), and a member of editorial board of IEEE journal of Emerging and Selected Topics in Power Electronics (JESPTE) and Associate Editor with JESPTE, and previously served as a Guest Editor-in-Chief for special issue in JESPTE and member of program committees of several IEEE and IET conferences and organized and chaired several special sessions and tutorials in numerous IEEE conferences. In recognition for his work and contribution to the field, Dr Adam has received several IEEE awards, for examples, best papers in ICRERA 2016 and 2018 in Birmingham and Paris, IEEE PES reviewer of the year 2018, star reviewer and star associate editor of JESTPE 2020, and 2021, 2022 and 2023.
